Nigeria: A Modern Day Sodom and Gomorrah

It was Edmund Burke, the 18th century English Statesman who said; "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." This precisely sums up the plight of modern day Nigeria.

A country where public service has become a call to loot, embezzle and abuse authority. Where politicians have long since dispensed with the pretence of manifestos and now campaign strictly on the platform of entitlement. Where so called religious leaders live in the lap of luxury while their congregations wallow in poverty. Where law enforcement has become a rental service for the deepest pockets. Where all forms of abuse are tolerated, culminating in legislative proposals to legalise child brides. Where business simply means trawling for cash and very few standards apply. Where even in diaspora the criminality of Nigerians has reached legendary notoriety. In essence, Nigeria is a place led by immoral exploiters and inhabited by a predatory citizenry.

Just as God said about Sodom and Gomorrah, "the outcry against them (sic) is so great and their sins so grievous". The question now is, "what shall be done about Nigeria?"

It's just a pity that having a better Nigeria seems ''most'' impossible than possible. We all are corrupt and greedy!
One of my lecturers told us what schooling used to be like in his days, constant electricity, instant jobs even before graduation and so on. He said his classmates are those in government now but, they're pretending to have forgotten how it used to be and are claiming these things are impossible, they know what to do if they really want things to be good as they used to be in the good old days. He fears that the next generation would go to the high-ways with guns, kill occupants of their choice cars and jet off like it's the normal thing to do to satisfy their urge of riding in particular cars!

    1. Indeed some good men have gotten up and fallen during the struggle. But in a country of 160 million people we need more people to take more action. I'm not sure that your lecturer's fears for the future are any worse than the actual reality being experienced right now.

  2. **sigh** I used to think and call America 'Sodom and Gomorrah'...I used to think that the access they have to guns and the way they think bout everything in life was wrong, I mean, I had a problem with how much freewill they have to lots of things....and the worst is, the way they accept everything and even if they do not agree with it, they still find a way around it.....I mean, I had a big problem with lots of things...buh now....**sigh** I got nothing against them mehn......especially when I look back at Africa...

    1. In America there still seems to be a battle going on between liberals and right wingers. That might yield some good eventually. Unfortunately, many parts of Africa are seeing the unchecked advance of evil agenda!

  3. "Battle between liberals and right wingers" that's a quote I will be using soon. There are a lot of things wrong with Nigeria not just corruption, illiteracy and over population. It will take a lot of good men to salvage that.
