There has been a lot of investment made in helping teenage parents manage better and build a better life for themselves. However it will require more than improved sex and relationship education to maintain the drop in teen pregnancies. Young people need to be presented with more opportunities for success than just the sports and entertainment businesses. They are unlikely to be motivated by the prospect of leaving school to take up minimum wage jobs. Those who are academically able should not be prevented from going on to higher and further education just because of cost. Others who may not meet the university standard should be encouraged to take up opportunities for training and skills development. This isn't just the key to dealing with teenage pregnancy; it might also be the way forward in tackling youth unemployment.

ReplyDeleteSo I'm wondering what they did in the UK to reduce teenage pregnancy, cos we need same in naija, especially the rural areas. Those kids breed like rabbits gaddemit!
Over here they threw a lot of money and services at the problem. A number of causes for it were exploitation of girls by gangs, girls targeting social housing, family breakdown etc.

Papi...when I saw the title of this post...I read this post looking for a comparison to the level of teenage pregnancy in Africa buh I saw none...Papi....lemme talk bout my country...most of the teenagers would rather commit suicide or runaway than face their parents...no one helps those lil girls Papi....and it sucks...the weight of the stigma on the teenager and the parents is not something any young girl wants to put her folks through....so what do they do??...They commit suicide...**shakes head** Sad right?
